EUSD UPDATES

Dear Families,

As the new year begins, we would like to emphasize the significance of student wellness and share some insights into how we are working to promote our Learner Profile competency of wellness advocate. In EUSD, we firmly believe that a healthy and happy student is a successful student.

Student wellness is not just a buzzword; it is a fundamental aspect of a child's overall development. A student's well-being directly influences their ability to learn and perform well academically. Teaching students to manage stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges equips them with vital life skills that are essential for their well-being throughout adulthood. Finally, a focus on student wellness creates a positive school culture that fosters inclusivity, respect, and a supportive community.

In EUSD, we define wellness advocates as learners who promote mental, social and physical well being for themselves and others. We are committed to providing an environment that supports and nurtures the well-being of our students. Here are some ways in which we promote student wellness:

T.R.A.C (Teambuilding, Regulation, Awareness and Community) teachers provide weekly lessons in social and emotional learning.

Mental Health Resources: We offer access to mental health counselors to provide support to students who may be struggling with emotional challenges. Additionally, we have full time school psychologists at every school site.

Physical Education and Nutrition: Our curriculum includes physical education and yoga instruction, and we provide nutritious meals from our award winning Farm to School program to ensure students are physically healthy.

Sustainability Efforts: We support healthy, sustainable options in our schools from chemical free cleaning, to LED lighting, solar power, rainwater collection to school gardens and outdoor learning spaces.

We believe that student wellness is a collaborative effort between school and parents. By working together, we can help our students thrive not only academically but also in their overall well-being. Please see the information below about mental health workshops to support parents in addressing potential areas of need.

We know a healthy and happy child is a child who can achieve their limitless potential.

Warmly,

Andrée Grey, Ed.D.
Superintendent

PROPOSITION 28

In November 2022, CA voters passed Proposition 28 which provides additional funding for Arts Education in California public schools. The allocation of Prop 28 funds had us analyze our current system and we recognized the importance of offering equal opportunities and access to all EUSD students across all nine school sites.

Based on feedback from our surveys and meetings with staff and educational partners, we are restructuring our Enrichment schedule to make it cohesive and consistent for all schools beginning in Fall 2024. All students will receive instruction in PE/ Yoga, TRAC, and VAPA, in the form of one semester of Art and one semester of Music, which will be fully funded by EUSD. All sites will also offer a fourth component that is best aligned to their community needs which will be half funded by EUSD and half funded by the site (Encinitas Education Foundation).

We are committed to nurturing the development of the whole child through the lens of EUSD’s Learner Competencies.
